The downside is the difficulty to find Avgas and the maintenance labor cost which is considered at 12 hours per each flight hour. Spare parts could also be a problem but they estimate they will have enough in stock to keep the last DC-6 flying until 2015.

This Douglas DC-2 is one of only two examples remaining in the world. The aircraft has a MGTOW of only 19,200 pounds, and is flown normally around 14,000 pounds. It holds 600 gallons of fuel, and can remain airborne for almost 8 hours. The aircraft has rarely been seen in flight at any airshows since 1985, and has never been to Oshkosh for AirVenture.

The hijacker forced the crew to land in Cuba. Two special operations operatives entered through the cockpit window, and replaced the copilot. One of the operatives, impersonating the copilot, met with and overpowered the hijacker.

You can see the red fuel caps on the inboard wing section. Also not easily seen is the landing light panel near center of this photo. This panel prevents the landing light from shining into the crews eyes when they look back to see. Another recent addition to a few propliners is the placement of a convex mirror on the panel to allow the pilot to see any evidence of an increasing engine or exhaust stack fire.

She flies once or twice a week for most of the year including to a few fly-ins and Oshkosh.
